Information in a Dynamic Management Model: An Application to Plant-Tissue Analysis and Fertilisation Scheduling

Abstract

A stochastic dynamic programming model is used to determine the economically optimal level and timing of nitrogen fertilization in an agronomic crop. The model incorporates plant-tissue sampling as a crop monitoring device that provides information for a midseason fertilization application. The optimal decision rule is compared to alternative fertilization strategies that do not explicitly make use of tissue sampling information. Results indicate a value of information associated with tissue sampling, although it is quite small in some cases. Copyright 1990 by Oxford University Press.
