Abstract

(Arthur Rich’s fundamental and unique masterpiece ‘Business and Economic Ethics. The Ethics of Economic Systems’ (published in German in 1984/1990; in English in 2006) is discussed against the backdrop of the international development of business and economic ethics since the 1980s. A great number of important insights are still relevant for the foundation of business and economic ethics and the development of a humanly reformed and ecologically regulated market economy: the contribution of Christian theology to the ethical dialogue in a pluralistic society; Rich’s ethical reasoning that defies ethical relativism and skepticism; Rich’s “hermeneutic circle” of economic rationality and ethical reasoning; the distinction of economic systems and economic orders and the variety of market economies; the indispensable ecological dimension of any market economy; basic conditions for a participative cooperation in a global economy, etc. )
