Abstract

This study analyses the discursive construction of the concept of “Europe”. It considers two speeches held by French President Nicolas Sarkozy in two different situations of political communication: the European Parliament and the Romanian Parliament. Starting from a semantic analysis, the study highlights the way in which the French President Nicolas Sarkozy adapts his speech to the two audiences, which he perceives differently, from the point of view of the institutional and cultural context. The study demonstrates that the political political actor treats the terms “Europe” and “European” differently: in Bucharest, he extensively uses the explicit variant “the European Union” and, consequently, he resorts to a series of strategies for the disambiguation of the term “Europe”; before the European Parliament, Sarkozy uses the term “Europe” without restrictions, as a synonym of the “European Union”.
