Abstract

Animal husbandry has an enormous potential to improve food security and to reduce poverty in rural areas and increasing productivity in this sector depends on sustainable agriculture development efforts. This scientific approach aims at assessing Romanian livestock sector, namely the development of the main indicators of livestock production, through the availability of food products of animal origin. The analysis of the main indicators of livestock production is based on statistical data provided by the National Institute of Statistics and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. In Romania, as the entire agricultural sector, animal husbandry has serious structural difficulties due to excessive fragmentation of ownership, low productivity and high self-consumption level in farms. Livestock production is low as a result of the sharp and steady reduction of livestock, the poor performance and the lack of competitiveness. In the period 1990-2013the total number of cattle decreased by 59.18%,, of pigs with 66.22%, of sheep with 35% and birds with 44%. Only the goat herds in 2013 outperforms 1990 with 30.65%. In the context of ensuring animal production to meet the requirements of domestic consumption and for export availabilities, animal husbandry in Romania, aimed equally the existence of corresponding numbers of animals and a race structure with a high genetic value.
