Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative research is to analyse the highlights of the characteristics and reflecting on the essential and sufficient elements in a definition of PE, identified in international scientific publications, of a theoretical nature. In order to steer the proceedings, ProKnow-C was used to select the bibliographic portfolio with 31 articles. These 31 articles were written by 55 authors, 31 from the UK institutions, and the rest from institutions in 13 countries. The researcher identified with the largest cooperation network was Umit Bititci. The existence of coupling documents (20 articles) was stated, Neely's et al. (1995) research being the most influential, and the lack of consensus in the conceptualisation of performance evaluation (PE) and the declaration of the elements that compose the theoretical background. In the PE definitions the following items were identified: 139 constitutive elements: 55 characteristics, 32 functions and 52 processes, eight of them present in the three groups.
