Globalisation and rising inequality in developed countries

Abstract

The distribution of earnings has widened throughout many of the OECD countries since the 1970s, particularly in the United States. An ever-growing literature examines the impact of globalisation on the growing income inequality and finds mixed results. This paper describes the theoretical linkages between globalisation and inequality and provides an overview of the evidence linking trade, capital mobility and immigration with the widening of the gap between the wages of the skilled worker and the unskilled worker.
