Gender Perception in Disaster Management: A Study on Academicians in Türkiye

This study was conducted to determine the gender perceptions of academicians in Turkey in disaster management and the possible related factors. The data of the study were collected from 309 academicians who volunteered to participate in the study between 16.04.2025 and 30.05.2025. In order to evaluate the gender perceptions of the participants in disaster management, the “Gender Role Perception Scale in Disaster Management†was analyzed using quantitative methods. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the academicians' perceptions of gender roles in disaster management were quite positive. In the study, a statistically significant difference was found between the variables of gender and having children and the perception of gender roles in disaster management. It was determined that the mean scores of female academicians who did not have children were significantly higher than male academicians and those who were parents. In the study, no statistically significant difference was found between the variables of being married, having disaster experience, receiving disaster education and receiving gender education and the perception of gender roles in disaster management. As a result, female academicians and academicians who did not have children had higher gender perceptions in disaster management. In line with the results, the effects of being male and parenting on gender perception in disasters can be examined in depth in future studies. This study can contribute to the development of gender-sensitive policies and practices in disaster management.
