Abstract

This essay pursues two main objectives: first, to construct a concise narrative on the evolution of the study of informality on a global scale since the 1970s, and how this body of work has influenced the examination of the phenomenon at national and subnational levels in Mexico; and second, to empirically identify, through econometric modeling, the variables that have the greatest impact on reducing labor informality in the country. The specialized literature reveals that this adverse situation is multicausal and has persisted for decades among the Mexican population without a significant decline in its occupational rate. Furthermore, based on the results of the ordinary least squares (OLS) model, income, education, and innovation emerged as key factors in promoting formal employment. Therefore, in the Mexican Republic, it is imperative to implement public policies that support the increase of fair wages, professional development, and the promotion of high-productivity economic activities.
