Abstract

El 28 de febrero de 1986, con una inflación de 400% anual, el Brasil emprendió su segundo gran esfuerzo de estabilización en veinticinco años. La grafica 1 muestra la historia de la inflación brasileña. En los cinco años transcurridos entre 1959 y 1964 las administraciones crecientemente populistas elaboraron la inflación desde 10 hasta 100%. Para 1968 ésta había bajado a 20%, un nivel que persistió hasta el primer choque petrolero, cuando la inflación saltó a 40%. Allí permaneció hasta 1979. En el quinquenio de 1980 a 1985 la incapacidad del gobierno para absorber los choques de la deuda y del petróleo en una forma no inflacionaria hizo que la inflación aumentara de 50 a 220 por ciento...
