Abstract

One of the reasons of the tertiary increase in the advanced economies is the increasing external consumption of certain business services. Behind this behavior it is the search of the advantages provided by the division of work, especially important for those services that have greater requirements of technology and workforce training, as it happens with advanced business services. However, the advanced business services enterprises try to be located in those territories from which they can access to wide markets that make possible to take advantage of economics of scale. This leads to space concentration of the sector around certain nodes, causing a reduced supply of these activities in the rest of regions. There are some evidences that point out that those regions with a smaller supply of advanced business services face a smaller competitiveness of these kind of firms, so there will be important efficiency differences in this sector between regions. For that reason in this paper we study technical efficiency in the advanced business services enterprises in Asturias, by using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA).
