Abstract

The Basque business framework has experienced deep transformations in the last decades: from a situation with prevalence of the great industry, located preferably in Bizkaia, it has become a preponderance of the services sector, with a growing protagonism of the small and medium enterprises (SME). The aim of this work is to analyse the recent evolution of the SME in the Basque country from an economic-managerial perspective, establishing the causes of its progressive preponderance and of the success reached by many of them. In the first place, the transformation of the Basque economic-managerial environment in the last decades is analysed, as a previous step to the examination of the SME’s evolution in this field during the same time. After that, diverse programs of public support to these companies are presented. In the end, the Basque successful SME managerial characteristics are identified, with a proposal of «the managerial model of Basque excellent SME ».
