Abstract

The Sestao Factory of Astilleros Españoles (La Naval), is part of the Naval Construction Division of the National Institute of Industry (INI) and shares the same strategy. In view of its present configuration, which results from the integration of four different centres, staffs and cultures, an adequate dimension and the appropriate compensation of professional groups represent prior objectives for action. Its tools for management and economic results are the PIMET, PMG and PSI. The factory has Departments for New Construction and Naval Repairs. At present they build medium-sized tankers for petrol, chemical and phosphorous products, in accordance with a market of growing demand. Continuous efforts in the improvement of productivity, the results which derive from the three main programmes of industrial reorganisation, the fruit of selective material and non-material investments, the present economic situation and foreseeable prospects of the market, suggest that the Factorys position will be consolidated and that profitability thresholds will be attained by the end of 1992 or beginning of 1993, after a hard period of reestructuring.
