Abstract

This paper describes the present implementation of strategic planning in Spanish, North American and European companies. In the mid nineteen-eighties, company management felt that the results of strategic planning were not adequate, demonstrating that there are two fundamental causes of this inefficiency. On the one hand, the dynamism and complexity of the environment which makes economic forecasting difficult, and on the other, defects in the development and implementation of this planning. All this makes it necessary to review the present approach of, strategic planning to create a new form of planning called Strategic Management. In this situation, Spanish companies have clear disadvantages in comparison with their competitors in other industrial countries, and managers must make efforts in order to be able to implement the strategic approach in the present economic management of our companies to ensure their future competitiveness within the European Single Market.
