Abstract

The unique structural and functional advantages of ZIF-8 and its MOF blending are beneficial due to zeolite-like properties such as stability, high surface area, and tunable porosity, making it a promising photocatalyst. This review highlights photocatalytic properties of ZIF-8 such as precise pores, high adsorption capacity, and robust framework to improve light harvesting, charge separation, and substrate access. The strategies to further enhance its efficiency by doping, ligand modification, and hybridization as well as its applications in water splitting area, synthetic design strategies including ion incorporation, material integration, catalyst modification, and thermal treatment are highlighted to improve light absorption, optimized charge dynamics, and scalability. The review explores its potential in solar hydrogen generation, emphasizing its multifunctional energetic properties in sustainable energy technologies following the UN Sustainable Development Goals for clean water #SDG6 and Climate Action #SDG13. Furthermore, by integrating machine learning techniques along with density functional theory can guide to exploration of interaction mechanisms to uncover its untapped potential as the next-generation material for energy harvesting is covered.
