Financing small photovoltaic applications

Abstract

There can be no development without electricity, and sustainable development is not possible without a sustainable source of energy. So in the context of worldwide development policy being discussed in the wake of the Earth Summit at Rio, solar energy must be considered more seriously than ever before, because only solar energy is sustainable. Solar in this context includes photovoltaics, solar thermal, solar water heating, wind, small hydro, and biomass cogeneration. This paper is about solar electricity, and photovoltaics specifically; off-grid, stand-alone, small-scale household PV, for rural applications. 3.1 billion people—more than half the planet's population—still live in rural areas. Two thirds of them have no access to the electric grid. PV is their greatest hope.
