Renewable energy as an economic energy source for remote areas

Abstract

A well engineered renewable energy system can be cost effective, has a high reliability and can improve the quality of life in remote areas. The economic constraints can be met if these systems are fundamentally well designed, use appropriate technology and make use of effective load control techniques. In this paper the match between high technology engineering, high reliability, and simple and effective operation as seen from the user, is investigated. Economic analyses are performed to compare different energy systems, i.e. renewable energy systems, diesel, extended grid supplies and hybrids. Appropriate technology and new techniques in energy conversion for photovoltaic, wind and micro hydro are discussed. Practical results from in-house developed power converters for the purpose of energy conversion within a renewable energy system are shown.
