Abstract

The disorder-induced piezoelectric coefficients, which are the absorptivities divided by the fourth power of the frequencies, of amorphous germanium dioxide, boric oxide, and arsenic, have been determined from the far-infrared spectrum of the sound waves. They are 29 × 10−6, 140 × 10-6, and 11 × 10-6 D2 μm-3 bar-2 (cm s-1)-1, respectively. If the effects of the transverse waves can be neglected, as will often be so to an approximation because shear waves are expected to be much weaker in absorption than longitudinal waves, the longitudinal disorder-induced piezoelectric coefficients, are 9.8, 48, and 2.8 D2 μm-3 bar-2, respectively, for amorphous germanium dioxide, boric oxide and arsenic.
