Composition fluctuations in open systems involving noninteracting aggregates

Abstract

This paper deals with open systems consisting of large numbers of noninteracting aggregates. A theory for the description of composition fluctuations is presented. The basic feature of our approach is the following: although the behavior of individual aggregates is random, the time evolution of the whole system may be described by means of a system of deterministic balance equations. A physical interpretation of the main results is given in terms of the residence time distribution function.
