Sequence-frame harmonic stability between railway co-phase power supply systems and trains under various operation modes

Abstract

Co-phase Traction Power Supply System (CTPSS), comprising a Power Flow Converter (PFC), transformer, and Traction Network (TN), offers new insights into decarbonizing the electric railway energy system. However, harmonic stability issues caused by impedance mismatches between high-speed trains and the CTPSS can significantly impact the system’s stability. To address this challenge, a sequence-frame impedance model is firstly developed to characterize the impedance features of the Voltage-Source Converters (VSCs)-based PFC and the train under various TN operation modes. Notably, the indirect current control strategy used in VSCs and PFC plays a crucial role in influencing the coupling between harmonic frequencies. Furthermore, an advanced small-signal modeling approach for the single-phase VSCs is proposed, incorporating the fp−3f1 component in the AC side and the fp±2f1 coupling component in the DC side, which improves model accuracy by 50%. Finally, a sensitivity analysis of eigenvalue curve variations is conducted to assess the impact of model control parameters and operating modes on system stability. A case study of harmonic instability is presented, and the results are validated through Time-Domain Hardware-in-Loop (HIL) simulations.
