Energy development and its effect on the environment

Abstract

Protecting the environment against the impact of conventional energy systems is of the utmost importance, and both local and global impacts need attention. Local thermal and chemical pollution are illustrated here by the example of Kansk-Achinsk coal development. Global impacts (including climate change, ocean pollution, acid precipitation, and the ionization of the global atmosphere by krypton-85) are shown to be serious constraints on future civilization.
