Abstract

This paper uses the locations of cultural institute (CI) networks to estimate the culture-trade effect. We estimate a structural gravity model using data for 30 CI networks for 1985–2024. Our variable of interest is the number of foreign offices operated by the source in the host country. Our results show that an increase in CI foreign offices is associated with greater exports of aggregate and core cultural goods such as printed matter, recorded music and audio-visual media from host to source.
