Abstract

This paper explores the integration of the eco-cultural dimension into the teaching of French as a foreign language (FLE) in the Algerian university context. Drawing on a longitudinal action-research study conducted during the 2024/2025 academic year with thirty-two first-year undergraduate students at Kasdi Merbah University of Ouargla (UKMO), the study examines the pedagogical use of Isabelle Eberhardt's Au pays des sables within the 'Study of Literary Texts' module (semesters 1 and 2). A mixed qualitative methodology combining classroom observation, analysis of sixty-four written productions, and a perception questionnaire was adopted. Results show a mean improvement of 26.4% in interpretative competence across all evaluated criteria, and 87% of students expressed a desire to continue this approach. These findings contribute to the development of an eco-cultural pedagogical framework applicable to other Francophone university contexts in the Maghreb region.
