Abstract

This study analyzes the motivation of 92 Chinese language learners, divided between an introductory level group (L0) and a first-year undergraduate group (L1) at Inalco în France. No significant differences were found between the two levels regarding intrinsic motivation (IM) or amotivation (AM), but both groups exhibit high IM, driven by passion for the language and its future utility. In L1, students adopt a more pragmatic approach: over half now dedicate more than one hour daily to revision and place greater emphasis on exams. However, challenges persist, particularly in listening comprehension and with the fast-paced curriculum. These findings highlight a shift toward a more academic motivation in L1, suggesting avenues for further research.
