Identity structure of doctoral students through the speeches of their theses

Abstract

To consider the speeches of a doctoral thesis as a possible opening to reveal some components of the identity of its author never seems a closed track, on the contrary, we think that through the study of the linguistic forms exploited by the thesis, the ethos of the doctoral student is raised forcefully and that its identities (psychosocial and discursive) find means of manifestation. Based on a corpus of 25 doctoral theses published online, written in French and supported from 2000 onwards, we carry out a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the facts likely to mark these identities. Inspired by Patrick Charaudeau, our analysis grid emphasizes the particularities of the identity facts of the doctoral writing.
