La competitividad del turismo en el Caribe

Abstract

Se analizan los principales determinantes de la competitividad en el sector caribeño del alojamiento turístico sobre datos de panel del período 1995-2006, basados en una versión ampliada de un modelo empírico diseñado por Craigwell (2007). La medida de competitividad utilizada a posteriori corresponde al porcentaje de turistas del Canadá, los Estados Unidos y el Reino Unido e Irlanda del Norte que llegan a un destino caribeño. Se constata que la competitividad del turismo en el Caribe puede mejorar con medidas de política que favorezcan, entre otros, el aumento de las inversiones, el desarrollo del sector privado, el mejoramiento de infraestructuras, una reducción del consumo gubernamental, la flexibilización del mercado laboral, una menor vulnerabilidad ante los desastres naturales, un mayor desarrollo humano y alzas lentas en el precio del petróleo. Se pretende aquí cubrir el vacío de la investigación econométrica respecto de la competitividad del turismo en la región del Caribe
