Abstract

Since July 2022, the European Central Bank (ECB) has tightened its monetary policy at an unprecedented pace. In this article, we examine this development from three perspectives. Firstly, we demonstrate how significantly increased inflation rates and interest rates have altered the business environment of the German insurance sector, casting doubt on some perceived certainties. On one hand, this leads to considerable increases in claim amounts, while on the other hand, it improves investment opportunities, particularly for life insurers. Secondly, we summarize the potential implications for financial stability. Thirdly, we discuss whether this monetary policy reversal represents the beginning of a paradigm shift or merely a temporary deviation from a long-term trend towards lower interest rates.
