Abstract

The paper discusses the development of self-employment in context of global economic changes and changing structures of competition. Patterns of self-employed activities are analysed since the beginning of the 1990th in Germany. The paper is based on own empirical analyses of data provided by the Federal Statistical Office. One of the findings is the linear increase of self-employment which is carried out predominantly by a rise of micro-firms and solo-self-employment. The development is ultimately linked to the expansion of service sector employment which is discussed specifically for the liberal professions. Finally, regarding working hours and incomes a strong social and occupational heterogeneity of self-employment becomes visible which is marked by the term of diversity.
