Abstract
Trans-Abstract: The digital and ecological transformation of capitalist centers is accompanied by an increasing demand for raw materials where lithium plays a key role. At the same time, conflicts surrounding the exploration of lithium are coming to a head in northern Argentina. Lithium deposits in Argentina are mainly found in indigenous regions, which use the land for their natural economic activities. The ecological impact of lithium production jeopardizes this way of production and life. Based on a qualitative empirical study we argue that this is more than just a socio-ecological transformation conflict. Disputes over land, which can be understood as a form of original accumulation, frame the socio-ecological transformation conflict, as does the struggle of the indigenous population for recognition of their way of life and rights. Overall, the conflict dynamics surrounding lithium mining show that the socio-ecological transformation conflict must be embedded in a glocal context, i. e. both in its global position and in the local circumstances, to be comprehensively analyzed.
