Abstract

Trans-Abstract: The double transformation – digital and ecological – is currently hitting the German automotive industry particularly hard. And this technically and socially induced change in business strategies is being strongly accompanied by public discourse. However, much less is known about which employees in the industry are affected by the dual transformation and in what form, and what employees think about both transformations. This article traces the technological transformation experience, trust and future expectations of employees in the sector. The empirical basis is a quantitative representative survey of employees in the automotive industry (n > 4,400). Descriptive data show, on the one hand, how employees in the industry experience the dual transformation and which technical facets of the dual transformation are actually being experienced in the workplace. Further evaluations show that employees have a comparatively positive view of the future – of their work, “their” product and their industry. However, employees’ trust in the actors in management (as strategy-makers), the works council (as co-designers) and politics (as framework-setters) is mixed.
