Abstract

The growing complexity of cybersecurity threats and countermeasures, combined with the low awareness on this topic, demands innovative approaches to education and training. Recent literature highlights the potential of gamification and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance learner engagement and knowledge retention in the field of cybersecurity. This article offers a critical review of current applications of AI and gamification in cybersecurity education, with a focus on university-level teaching. Building upon this theoretical foundation, the study explores students and experts perceptions of AI and gamification use, aiming to contribute to a better understanding of how emerging technologies can enhance motivation and engagement in cybersecurity education. The insights obtained through a mixed-methods approach may support the development of more engaging and relevant cybersecurity higher education practices.
