Las pirámides financieras: soporte de una economía atípica

Abstract

Este artículo pretende explicar el proceso de formación y funcionamiento de las pirámides financieras, en qué momento se desploman y cómo su desmoronamiento afecta a una economía normal, con sus consecuencias estructurales y socioeconómicas. Se hace una breve resena contemporánea sobre el origen de las pirámides para entender que este fenómeno no es nuevo y que en diferentes épocas han penetrado en algunos sistemas económicos de Europa y Estados Unidos. Luego se explica la imposibilidad de que este sistema de estafa funcione a largo plazo. Finalmente, se describe lo que ha sucedido en Colombia durante el último trimestre de 2008 para concluir que, aunque las pirámides financieras dinamizan y promueven la actividad económica, ello no representa ni hace parte de la estructura formal de la economía, con lo cual se considera que no constituyen un pilar de la misma.
