Wirtschaftliche, technische und politische Herausforderungen von SMR-Konzepten

Abstract

Nach mehreren gescheiterten Versuchen einer „nuklearen Renaissance“ seit Mitte der 1970er-Jahre ist die aktuelle Diskussion um SMR-Konzepte ein weiterer Versuch, eine schwächelnde Industrie vor dem fortschreitenden Rückgang zu bewahren. Aufgrund der aktuellen Erkenntnisse und des Entwicklungsstands ist es unwahrscheinlich, dass SMRs innerhalb eines relevanten Zeitrahmens einen Beitrag zur Dekarbonisierung des europäischen Energiesystems leisten werden. Stattdessen wird die anhaltende Fokussierung auf ihre potenziellen Vorteile die notwendige Transformation des Energiesystems noch weiter verlangsamen. Die EU – und damit auch Deutschland – sollte nicht warten, bis erste Prototypen von SMR-Konzepten gebaut und vielleicht irgendwann in größeren Stückzahlen eingesetzt werden. Stattdessen sollte man auf Technologien setzen, die bereits heute kostengünstig verfügbar sind: Erneuerbare Energien in Kombination mit Speichern
