Abstract

Both the number of asylum applications and the number of applications rejected rose sharply in the period of 2008 to 2016. This has overburdened the asylum application procedure, which is prolonging processing times. What happens after an application for asylum has been refused and a refugee is not granted a residence permit or the right to stay in a country? This article offers insights into exceptional leaves to remain, deportation procedures and voluntary repatriation.
