Children - a career restraint for women in Germany

Author

Listed:
  • Wolfgang Ochel

Abstract

A survey conducted in 1998 in Germany showed that the great majority of women with children would like to have jobs. The latest OECD figures show, however, that this wish is realised to a far lesser extent in Germany than in other countries. The difference between the employment rate of women with two and more children and the employment rate of women without children is more than 20 percentage points in Germany. The international comparison of employment rates confirms that employment and family is not very compatible in Germany.
