Écologie territoriale et métabolisme urbain : quelques enjeux de la transition socioécologique

Abstract

Territorial ecology is an interdisciplinary field of research that allows for understanding local socio-ecological regimes. The territorial metabolism, i.e. the energy and material flows involved in a particular territory, is the expression of its socio-ecological regime ; its analysis can contribute to discussions on the socio-ecological transition, knowing that dematerialisation can be considered as a key to such a transition. This paper addresses the main issues related to dematerialisation in the particular case of cities and urban metabolism. It treats notably: mineral materials, biogenic substances, inter-territorial links and relationships. The limits of recycling and, at the same time, the importance of urban mines are emphasised, together with the need for reinserting cities in global biogeochemical cycles and to take into account urban material externalities.
