Abstract

The 1990s has witnessed an era of profound restructuring within the European banking industry. A M&As boom among financial institutions is occurring at a rapid pace in Europe. Financial globalisation, deregulation, technological advance, the Euro and shareholder value creation are the major factors that have fuelled the unprecedented level of mergers over the past few years. Despite a break in the trend in 2001 and uncertainty of economic and financial gains, banking consolidation in Europe will continue. In this perspective, two figures appears to be fundamental. A pursuing homogenisation of banking behaviour will lead to the establishment of a kind of an European dominant model. To ensure the stability of the European financial system, the supervisory authorities should rethink their regulatory structures in response to the emergence of large and pan-European financial groups in the market place.
