Abstract

Foreign direct investment is certainly one of the most salient features of globalisation. Multinational enterprises account for an increasing share of production, employment and trade in the world. The international production tends to be organised in a well specific way : the different stages in the productive process are spread over an increasing number of plants, localised in different countries. The final consumer goods sold in one country are often the assembly of components processed in several countries. Surely, international fragmentation of production is not a new phenomenon ; but, its importance is really new. More and more developing countries are vertically integrated in the international production. This article aims at examining how international production is organised around the world and, what are its motives and determinants. JEL codes : F02, F21, F23.
