Abstract

Globalisation and the appearance of new technologies for the transmission of information are placing knowledge at the heart of economic regulation. Agglomeration externalities and cumulative underlying mechanisms are a powerful vector for the structuring of the productive landscape. Our aim is to examine the impact of these externalities on firm location equilibria. We show that technological spillovers constitute a particularly disruptive centripetal force. Furthermore, technological intensity turns out to have a decisive impact on the welfare of populations. This influence is exerted through several channels and works in opposite directions depending on the skill levels of agents. The examination of various thresholds of exchange-costs vindicates the idea of a supranational statutory regulatory institution.
