Abstract

The current economic climate, characterized by inflation, crises, restructuring, labor market fluctuations, and rapid technological change, presents significant challenges to companies, particularly in the automotive industry. This sector is vulnerable to macroeconomic shifts such as rising material and labor costs, with HR departments playing a critical role in addressing these issues. This paper explores, through a case study of a multinational company's Romanian plant, how the Human Resources (HR) department can mitigate the negative impact of economic factors. A multi-method approach, including document analysis, literature review, analysis of Romania's automotive market, and interviews with industry experts, is used to examine the relationship between economic processes and HR strategies. Findings show that financial pressures, such as rising production costs and labor market instability, directly influence salary policies, employee benefits, and job stability, often leading to workforce reductions and lower employee morale. In response, the study highlights HR strategies such as digital transformation, flexible work arrangements, targeted retention programs, and a stronger focus on organisational culture. Transparency and effective communication are essential for maintaining employee wellbeing during restructuring and retaining key staff. Recruitment practices are also shifting toward internal promotion, while external hiring emphasizes quality over quantity. Ultimately, the paper recommends that HR professionals adopt adaptive strategies that address short-term challenges while supporting long-term organisational resilience.
