Statistical Thinking in Computer‐Based Learning Environments

Abstract

The theme of technology is particularly important for statistics education because of the role of technology in changing views of statistical knowledge, pedagogy and learning. The interactive multimedia technology of today allows for the creation of powerful learning environments where the focus is on the process that produced the data and its associated variation and the statistical thinking required to solve the problem. However, despite this optimistic view, students' self‐regulation and intrinsic motivation seem to be key concepts for learning in complex interactive computer‐based learning environments. We conclude with observations of teachers and students working with applets. More of these evaluations should be published and/or made available to the statistical community so that both positive and negative teaching experiences can be shared. Le thème de la technologie est particulièrement important pour l'enseignement des statistiques parce que la technologie a changé notre vision du contenu, de la pédagogie et de l'apprentissage des statistiques. Les technologies interactives multimédia d‘aujourd’hui nous offrent la possibilité de créer des environnements d‘apprentissages très puissant où l'on peut se concentrer sur le processus de génération des données, la variation associée et le raisonnement statistique nécessaire pour résoudre le problème. Mais, en dépit de cette vision optimiste, l'autorégulation et la motivation intrinsèque des étudiants sont des concepts clés pour un enseignement dans des environnements d'apprentissages assisté par ordinateur. Cette contribution se conclut avec quelques observations de professeurs et étudiants travaillant avec des applets. La communauté statistique a besoin de telles évaluations approfondies rapportant des expériences positives ainsi que négatives.
