La persistencia de la inflación en el área del euro: el papel de las expectativas

Abstract

Este artículo analiza la percepción que tienen los agentes sobre la naturaleza del período de baja inflación de los últimos años, en el contexto de un modelo en el que esos agentes forman sus expectativas a partir de reglas de predicción sencillas. La aproximación utilizada permite distinguir qué parte del fenómeno de inflación reducida se explicaría por factores temporales y qué parte podría considerarse de naturaleza permanente. Los resultados del análisis para el área del euro apuntan a que los agentes perciben como predominantemente transitorio el alejamiento reciente de la tasa de inflación con respecto al objetivo de política monetaria, si bien dichas desviaciones se caracterizarían por un grado de persistencia considerable. En términos comparativos, la persistencia estimada en el caso del área del euro de las desviaciones observadas con respecto al objetivo de inflación duplica aproximadamente a la correspondiente a Estados Unidos en los horizontes de uno y cinco años.
