Using visual journals to build resilience in an online Master of Arts in Art Education programme

Abstract

This action research study shares ways visual journaling was incorporated through online instruction to help practising art teachers work through daily stress, learn to practise mindfulness and self-care and finally, to reflect on their own classroom research to grow as artist-teachers during a two-year online Master’s in Art Education programme. The findings from the research show the importance of providing all teachers time, space, and a community of support to build the necessary skills and behaviours to develop resilience. The ultimate goal of visual journaling was not only to reflect on their research questions, but also to recognise the interconnectedness of body, mind, spirit and emotions teachers experience through an organic process of art making during these tumultuous times in education.
