Ruralità e differenze territoriali in Calabria

Abstract

This paper examines the geography of rurality across Calabria’s 404 municipalities using a multidimensional index derived through Principal Component Analysis. The results show that rurality in Calabria is more widespread than in Italy as a whole, but not necessarily more extreme. Significant territorial heterogeneity also emerges within the region: rurality, small population size, mountainous location, and classification as an inner area are related but do not represent equivalent categories. A comparison with the SNAI classification further shows that rurality and functional marginality do not fully overlap. The multidimensional approach thus captures differences across territories that classifications based on single criteria may overlook, providing a more comprehensive information base for territorial analysis and place-based policies.
