Abstract

Using data from a sample survey (PNAD - Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios) of 1997, the effects of pluriactivity, region, schooling and age on earnings, poverty and house facilities of agricultural households in Brazil are measured and analyzed. The analysis has shown tha all explanatory variables have significant effects, but region and achooling above 8 years proved to be the main determinants of the income level and the living conditions of the gricultural families. When the households are separated according to the presence of pluriactivity, large differences of income in favor of the pluractive are observed. However, when pluriactivity is ncluded in the regression models, its effect on income and poverty is largely suroassed by those of region and schooling.
