Abstract

TThe concept of co-production of the public service caught the attention of public authorities starting with the 80s when the paradigm of the new public management was extended. This notion involves the participation of citizens together with competent authorities in the entire process entailed by the public service: from planning to implementation and feedback. Thus, the citizen becomes a co-producer or even producer of added value. This article reviews how this concept has been approached in the scholarly literature until now, the mechanisms involved, its advantages and disadvantages, especially in the public sector. The theoretical approach is supported by several examples from practice.
