Formación y desarrollo de un distrito metalúrgico en Valladolid (c. 1842-1951)

Abstract

Este trabajo propone un recorrido temporal de largo plazo para averiguar cuáles son las causas que explican el desarrollo y la importancia de la industria metalmecánica en Valladolid desde finales del siglo xix. Esta ciudad supo aprovechar las ventajas derivadas de su localización geográfica, de los medios de transporte —Canal y Ferrocarril— y del proceso de electrificación del inicio de siglo para irse distanciando paulatinamente de una vía de desarrollo excesivamente dependiente del sector agrario. En esta localidad coinciden muchas de las características propuestas por la literatura sobre distritos industriales. Entre otras, destacan el predominio de pequenas empresas especializadas en la fabricación de productos ˜ metálicos, la existencia de industrias subsidiarias, una intensa participación de las instituciones sociales locales en la formación técnica de trabajadores y el conocimiento no codificado. Desde la década de 1940 se produjo una cierta mutación de la oferta de las empresas hacia la manufactura de otros productos orientados al sector material de transporte, especialmente el automóvil. Este proceso de transformación, que puede entenderse como un mecanismo interno de adaptación del distrito ante cambios externos, ha sido algo habitual en otros casos. KEY Classification-JEL: N44.
