El cooperativismo vitivinícola en tiempos de crisis: el Sindicato de Viticultores de Igualada (1921-1936)

Abstract

El objetivo de este artículo es explicar los problemas a los que se enfrentaba el cooperativismo vitivinícola a comienzos del siglo XX a partir de un estudio de caso. Utilizando documentación interna de la propia bodega cooperativa, se explican los obstáculos que afrontaban estas organizaciones en un período muy crítico para los mercados vinícolas, cómo intentaban superar estos problemas y cuáles eran sus limitaciones en cuanto empresas que competían en un mercado deprimido del vino. El caso estudiado tiene el interés añadido de tratarse de un proyecto totalmente autónomo del pequeño campesinado que logró consolidarse y tener continuidad hasta prácticamente nuestros días. Se argumenta que tanto la continuidad y consolidación de la cooperativa, como también sus debilidades y limitaciones, pueden explicarse por las características y el funcionamiento de este tipo específico de organización empresarial.
