Nonmetro Retirement Counties' Strengths and Weaknesses

Abstract

For nearly 500 nonmetro counties, the formula for economic success has been to attract retirees as new residents. Rapid growth in population and employment has made such counties a bright spot among otherwise gloomy nonmetro economic news. Questions remain, however, about the quality of the jobs created and about retirees' apparent coolness to funding education and road building programs.
