Abstract

Cigarette smoking induced deaths may likely increase from 5 million in 2010 to10 million in a decade. In the 20th century about 100 million deaths from tobacco was reported. If the current trends of smoking persist, tobacco will kill about 1 billion people this century, mostly in low- and middle-income countries. This study was set out to evaluate perceived causes, reasons of smoking, pattern of smoking and factors that influenced smoking. About 1,182 respondents agreed to participate after they were made to understand the full details of the study. The questionnaire captured demographic data, reasons for smoking, pattern of smoking and factors that influenced smoking.
