Abstract

Patients with rheumatic diseases (RD) are at high risk of developing several comorbid conditions, including cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) compared to healthy population. These events have a great effect on mortality [1,2]. The pathogenic factors involved are not yet fully understood. Metabolic syndrome (MetS), which includes insulin resistance, central obesity, dyslipidemia, and hypertension, may provide a link between accelerated atherosclerosis and inflammation in these diseases. Oxidative stress markers, thrombogenic or pro-inflammatory mediators released in course of autoimmune rheumatic diseases play a key role in the development in atherosclerosis, or other cardiometabolic disturbances frequently observed in these patients [1,2].
